A stump left behind is a trip hazard, a termite buffet, a sucker factory and a mower obstacle. We grind it out below grade, chase the roots and leave a spot you can sod, plant or build over.
Tree companies leave stumps because grinding is a separate machine and a separate trip. We'd rather finish the job: a tracked grinder comes through the gate, grinds the stump 8 to 12 inches below grade — or as deep as Georgetown's limestone allows on the west side of town, which is sometimes 6 — chases the big surface roots out a few feet, and the crew rakes the chips into the hole and backfills so the lawn can be sodded or the bed replanted. On the Blackland clay side of town we can usually go deep; on caliche we hit rock and tell you so.
Before any of that, we call Texas 811 for a utility locate, because a stump grinder wheel doesn't care whether it's chewing pecan roots or a gas line. We also look at what's around the stump — sprinkler lines, low-voltage lighting wire, a foundation, the neighbor's fence — and plan the grind accordingly. Live oak and cedar elm stumps left un-ground will sucker for years; grinding is the only thing that reliably stops it.

How much does stump grinding cost in Georgetown?
Roughly $5 to $7 per inch of stump diameter measured at the ground, with a $150 minimum. A 30-inch live oak stump runs $450 to $900 depending on roots and access; several stumps in one visit get volume pricing. Backfill with topsoil is a small add-on.
Can you grind stumps in Sun City?
Yes, and it's most of our stump work. The Community Association's rules cover the tree removal itself; the stump on your lot is yours. The 35-inch grinder gets through the side-yard gates on most Sun City lots.
Will the grinder hit my sprinkler lines?
Not if we know where they are. 811 marks public utilities, not your irrigation; show us the heads and we'll pull back around them. A cut line is rare and we fix it if it happens.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Better to plant a few feet over. The old root mass takes years to rot and the chips left in the hole tie up nitrogen while they decompose. If you must plant in the same spot, we'll grind deeper and haul the chips out.
Do you grind cedar stumps after clearing?
Cedar stumps on a mulched lot are usually ground flush by the mulcher as it goes. In a yard we grind them like any other stump; cedar doesn't sucker, so a flush cut is sometimes enough.
