Sun City's first phases were planted in the mid-1990s. Thirty years on, those live oaks are big enough to have the forks that fail in ice, the interiors that fill with ball moss and the root grafts that carry oak wilt — on lots with no room to drop anything.
Del Webb opened Sun City Texas in 1995 on 4,750 acres of Hill Country limestone northwest of Georgetown, and today it's around 8,500 homes and 15,700 residents over 55, with three golf courses, fourteen miles of nature trails and a Community Association whose landscape standards are stricter than the city's. The trees are the story: live oaks and cedar elms planted with the first homes along Del Webb Boulevard, Sun City Boulevard and around Legacy Hills, now thirty years old and forty feet across, plus the native post oaks and live oaks the developer kept on the larger lots toward the Berry Creek side. All of it on thin caliche over rock, all of it on tight lots where the only place to set a crane is the street.
We work Sun City every week: live oaks reduced and cabled before ice season, ball moss and deadwood cleaned out of the interiors the CA's landscape reviewers flag, mistletoe pruned out of the cedar elms in winter, stumps ground through the side-yard gates, and crane removals coordinated with the CA and the neighbors. Questions from Sun City homeowners
Does the Sun City Community Association have to approve tree removal?
For a tree on your lot, the CA's landscape standards and architectural review apply on top of the city's rules — a removal request goes through the CA before we cut, and we help with it. The city's Heritage Tree permit applies separately to any live oak, post oak, cedar elm or pecan measuring 26 inches or more; most of the planted trees in Sun City aren't there yet, but the native oaks the developer kept on larger lots often are.
Why is there so much ball moss on Sun City live oaks?
Because the trees are mature, close together and dense — exactly the still, shaded, humid interior ball moss likes. It's not hurting the tree, but the CA's reviewers flag heavy buildup and it does hold weight and shade. We clean it by hand with the deadwood and thin the interior a touch so it comes back slowly.
Can a crane even fit on a Sun City street?
Yes — a 40-ton crane sets up in the street or your driveway with pads, and the pick goes over the house. We coordinate the closure and the neighbors' driveways with the CA and do most Sun City crane work in a morning.
Is oak wilt in Sun City?
Oak wilt is active across Williamson County and Sun City's dense live oak plantings are exactly the kind of grafted grove it moves through. If a red oak on your street died in a month or your live oak's leaves are browning along the veins, call before you prune anything. Early mapping and a trench can save a whole block.
Do you work around golf-cart traffic and the trails?
