Tree service in Leander

Tree service for Leander — cedar-covered hills, live oaks and the fastest-built subdivisions in the county

Leander sits on the limestone side of the county: cedar thickets, shallow-rooted live oaks and new neighborhoods where the builder kept the big trees and the roots paid for it.

Forestry mulcher clearing Ashe juniper on a limestone-outcrop lot west of Georgetown, live oaks left standing

Leander went from a small town on the Austin & Northwestern railroad to one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas in a generation, and almost all of that growth is on Edwards limestone west of I-35 — Crystal Falls, Travisso, Bryson, Mason Hills, Grand Mesa, Palmera Ridge, the big lots out toward Nameless Road and the Balcones Canyonlands. That ground grows two things: Ashe juniper, which covers every hillside the builder didn't scrape, and live oaks and post oaks that root wide and shallow over the rock. When a subdivision keeps a big native oak in a new yard, the grading, the trench for the sprinkler and the fill around the foundation cut into the critical root zone, and three summers later the post oak is dying from the top down.

Leander has its own tree ordinance and permit process through its planning department, distinct from Georgetown's UDC Chapter 8, and Pedernales Electric Cooperative, not Georgetown Utility Systems, runs the lines through most of the city — different clearance contact, same ten-foot rule. Oak wilt is well established in the Leander and Cedar Park cedar-oak country; we run every oak job on the July–January calendar and paint every cut.

Questions from Leander homeowners

Does Leander have tree protection rules?

Yes — Leander's Composite Zoning Ordinance has its own tree preservation and mitigation rules with protected sizes and a permit process, separate from Georgetown's. Single-family lots have exemptions, but heritage-size natives kept by the developer are often still covered. We check with the city before we quote a big oak.

Why are so many post oaks dying in the new Leander neighborhoods?

Construction. Post oaks can't tolerate fill dirt over the roots, trenching through the critical root zone, compaction from equipment or a lawn kept wet by daily irrigation. The damage is done during the build and the tree declines two or three years later. Some can be helped with root-zone care if it's caught early; many are past that by the time the crown is thinning.

Who trims trees near the power lines in Leander?

Most of Leander is Pedernales Electric Cooperative territory. PEC clears its own primary lines on a cycle; the service drop to your house is yours to keep clear, and PEC will de-energize or drop it on request so we can work safely. The east side near I-35 may be Oncor or Georgetown Utility Systems — we'll figure out which.

Can you clear cedar on my acreage without a permit?

Ashe juniper isn't a protected species in Leander or Georgetown. The permit question is about the oaks and elms on the lot, which we flag and keep. Outside the city limits and ETJ there's no city rule at all.

Is oak wilt bad in Leander?

It's one of the more affected parts of the county — dense live oak groves on limestone with grafted roots. February through June, no oak pruning; paint every cut; call us before you prune, not after.
